A large fire at a paper recycling facility in Auckland has been brought under control.

A fire service spokesman said the fire, at the Carter Holt Harvey waste paper facility in Penrose, started in a storage area for recycled paper about 3.55pm.

At its height the fire covered more than 30 square metres.

Nine fire crews were sent to the scene and had since brought the fire under control, he said.
