One person is dead and four others injured after a four-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 north of Cambridge in Waikato.

Police said initial indications were that a car towing a trailer and a van had collided head on and two other cars had then struck or been struck by the wreckage.

Police and emergency services were at the scene, at the intersection of SH1 and Hautapu Road.

One person was confirmed to have died at the scene and four others were being treated by ambulance staff for injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Short diversions were in place around the scene and motorists were asked to take care on the narrower roads.

Serious Crash Unit staff were on the way to the scene, police said.
