Police have appealed for help from the public after an elderly woman reported she had to fend off sexual advances from a teenager in Rangiora, north of Christchurch, this morning.

An 89-year-old woman has told police that a man, aged about 18, approached her at the front door of her home in Percival St about 10.30am.

Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston said the woman told police the man "asked her for sex and reached out".

"She [told police she] fended him off and he immediately took off on his push bike."

Johnston appealed for sightings of a man wearing a dark grey water proof jacket and a baseball cap riding a bike around Rangiora this morning.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Tanya Drake on (03) 363 7400.
