A man has been killed and another has been seriously injured after a car and a four-wheel-drive vehicle collided outside Sanson, north of Palmerston North, this afternoon.

Inspector Chris Tate, of Central District Communications, said the crash happened about 4.15pm between Foxton and Sanson.

The car and the 4WD vehicle had collided about 900 metres from a major intersection in Sanson, he said.
