A man and a woman were arrested near Wellington after a police chase which followed an incident during which people were allegedly threatened with a gun.

Police said they were called to a Kilbirnie address shortly after 6pm on Saturday after the occupants were allegedly threatened with a firearm by a male offender and a female associate.

About an hour after the initial incident a car believed to be carrying both persons was seen near the address again. Several armed police units followed it on to the motorway.

A short pursuit followed on the Hutt motorway when the vehicle failed to stop. The chase ended when the car was spiked after leaving the motorway and continuing on to the Western Hutt Road.

Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested without incident.

The female driver of the vehicle has been charged with driving offences and released on police bail.

A man has been charged with firearms and drugs charges. More charges may follow. They are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Police did not elaborate on the nature of the offences or the type of firearm involved.
