A New Plymouth teenager has been arrested and charged after allegedly assaulting a Russian triathlete.

Sergeant Bruce Irvine said it was alleged the 17-year-old jumped out of a car and knocked the man off his bike near the intersection of Timandra St and Coronation Ave about 3.20pm on Wednesday.

The triathlete was in New Plymouth to compete in the ITU world cup sprint race last Sunday.

The teenager has been charged with injuring with intent to injure and will appear in the New Plymouth District Court today.
