A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a violent incident in South Auckland overnight that left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

Police said the arrested man had been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, following a serious assault on a 48-year-old man in the suburb of Clendon Park.

Police and ambulance were called about 12.30am.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital and had since been transferred to Auckland Hospital where he remained in a critical condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Ellwood of Manurewa CIB said the two men were known to each other and police inquiries were continuing.
