Police investigating the killing of a homeless Auckland man are seeking a man who has breached his bail.

Maqbool Hussain, 49, originally from Pakistan, was found murdered in a temporary squat in Balmoral on Monday.

Police said today they wanted to locate Justin Vance Turner, 28, who is in breach of bail after having recently been arrested for breaching prison-release conditions.

Turner was described as Caucasian with "noticeably olive skin". He has short black hair, brown eyes and "comparatively bushy eyebrows".

"He has a prominent nose, stands 176 centimetres tall, is of medium build and has a neck tattoo of a dog wearing a spike collar," police said.

"He may have changed his appearance by shaving."

Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said Turner had no fixed abode, but was known to have frequented the Balmoral area.

"Mr Turner is a person of interest to this investigation and we urge anyone who knows where he is to contact police promptly either by calling 111 or the operation team on 820 5763," Cahill said.
