An Auckland prisoner is in hospital after an altercation with another prisoner.

The inmate was stabbed by another inmate at Paremoremo Prison this afternoon,  3News reported.

Corrections confirmed an incident took place between two prisoners at the prison.

Prison workers contained the incident and no staff were injured, the Corrections spokeswoman said.

An ambulance transported the injured prisoner to hospital.

Police were aware of the incident.
