A man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was found by a passing police patrol with what appear to be gunshot injuries.

Police came across the man in Great North Road, Henderson, in west Auckland, at about 6.30pm.

An ambulance service spokesperson said the man was in his 30s.

Great North Road was closed between McLeod Road and Edmonton road while the scene was examined for evidence. It has since been reopened.

An Auckland Hospital spokesperson said the man was in a stable condition.
