A man charged with subjecting a prostitute to a vicious sexual attack in an Auckland cemetery has appeared in court today.

Auckland chef Viktor Mykhailov, 28, was arrested on Saturday and charged with kidnap, aggravated wounding and five counts of sexual violation.

The Ukrainian was aided by an interpreter in the Auckland District Court.

Though his lawyer, Steve Bonnar, did not make an application for name suppression, his client was granted image suppression because "identification could be an issue at trial".

Mykhailov's sister sat in the public galley and cried during his brief court appearance.

The case appeared on television show Police Ten 7 last month, when Detective Sergeant Geoff Baber gave details of the alleged attack.

He said a woman had been subjected to an hour-long ordeal during which her clothes were ripped off in a darkened Symonds St graveyard.

When the man eventually fled, the 34-year-old victim sought shelter nearby before approaching a taxi driver.

Later she crossed the road to the Langham Hotel where police found her.

She was hospitalised with serious facial injuries.

Baber said the response after the show was broadcast provided some crucial information and the investigation gained momentum from there.

Mykhailov will be back in court to enter a plea next month.
