Burglars have tied sheets together to abseil into an Auckland mall and steal up to $5000 worth of perfume.

Fragrance Outlet in the Fox Outlet Centre in Northcote was hit overnight by burglars who smashed two holes in the roof and lowered themselves into the store using a chain of sheets.

Hemali Devmurari opened the shop at 10.10am today and said she did not know what to do.

"It's like something out of a movie scene. You want to laugh, but you can't laugh about it," she said.

The burglars smashed a glass cabinet and also stole perfume from drawers and behind the counter.

They left behind a crowbar and a sock, along with a backpack and rubbish sack full of perfume.

Fragrance Outlet remained open while Devmurari waited for police to carry out a scene examination.

The roof is due to be repaired today.

"You just have to carry on with normal business," Devmurari said.
