A police officer is in hospital after being attacked while trying to break up a brawl in Auckland overnight.

Police said that just after midnight, they responded to a report of a large number of people fighting in the Glen Innes town centre.

A sole police officer was the first to arrive and he was surrounded then assaulted by a number of people on the forecourt of a petrol station on Apirana Avenue.

The exact circumstances surrounding the assault were still under investigation, police said.

The officer received a laceration to the back of his head and was admitted to hospital.

Police were questioning two men in relation to the incident.
