A man has fired a shotgun into a petrol station during an armed robbery in Mt Wellington, Auckland.

Police say two male offenders entered the Mobil petrol station on Mt Wellington Highway at 1.25am this morning.

The two Mobil staff members locked themselves in a back office when the armed men demanded to be let inside the petrol station.

Police say the offenders smashed the glass door and fired a shot at the counter to get to the till.

Tobacco and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzin said he was concerned by the "brazenness and determination" of the men.

"It is concerning that these offenders have brought a loaded weapon with them and have been prepared to discharge it."

The offenders fled the scene in a stolen a white Nissan Skyline.

Police found the vehicle a kilometre from the petrol station with the engine still running.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Police have released CCTV footage of the face of one of the alleged offenders.
