A man charged with violently kidnapping a woman and escaping from Auckland central police station has been re-captured.

Brett Makiri, 23, was first arrested last Wednesday but managed to break out of police custody that afternoon before authorities caught up with him in Papatotetoe late Friday night.

Despite shaving off his long curly locks, Makiri was located and arrested at the home of one of his associates.

Police allege Makiri drove a woman from Auckland to the Coromandel and assaulted her last Monday, before she escaped when the car ran out of petrol.

Makiri is charged with kidnapping, injuring with intent to injure, escaping police custody and unlawfully taking a car.

In a brief appearance at Auckland District Court today Makiri was detained in custody and ordered to reappear on Monday.
