The University of Auckland remains in a listing of the world's top 100 universities and has improved on last year's ratings  - but only slightly.

The QS/Times Higher Education appeared yesterday, with Harvard University in the US retaining its number one ranking.

Auckland comes in at 61, equal with the University of Wisconsin.

While an improvement on last year's 65th place, it is well down on its 40th equal placing in 2006 and 50th place in 2007.

The universities are scored on subjects as well, and Auckland rates best in social sciences at 37 but natural sciences score only 83.

Arts and humanity score 42, life sciences 40 and engineering and IT 55.

No other New Zealand universities make the list.

Eight Australian universities are listed in the top 100, six above Auckland, headed by the Australian National University at 17.

UK's Cambridge University has moved up from third to second position.

Yale University in the US slipped one position to third.

The rankings are based on an international survey of 9000 academics who assess the institutions' research facility, teaching quality and ability to recruit staff and students abroad.

"The broad message of these tables is clear - the leading UK research universities are held in high esteem internationally but countries like China and Korea, which are investing massively in their best institutions, are snapping at our heels" Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group of universities said.

The top 10 universities are: Harvard (US), Cambridge (UK), Yale (US), University College London, London (UK), Imperial College, London and Oxford (both UK, joint 5), Chicago (US), Princeton (US), MIT, Massachusetts (US) and California Institute of Technology (US).
