A suspicious fire has badly damaged the administration block at Paparangi School in the Wellington suburb of Newlands.

The school now had no electricity or administrative facilities, and parents were asked to keep their children at home today if they could, police said.

The school would be closed for the day, but some staff would be available to supervise children who were not able to stay home.

Wellington police said they were investigating the fire, which happened shortly after 3am. The cause had not been confirmed.

Anyone with information about the fire or anyone who may have been in the area at the time was asked to contact police on (04) 381 2000.
