A zombie outbreak wasn’t enough to scare away potential students at Massey University’s open day.

The zombies were part of Massey’s Drama Society and were one of the many interesting sights helping to showcase the university yesterday and what it has to offer.

Other entertainment included live music, a free sausage sizzle and a whip demonstration.

“It’s about getting prospective students to come and see and experience open day and see what a wonderful university we have,” Massey’s events co-ordinator Sarah Kelly said.

The day attracted more than 2000 students, with some of those travelling a long way to check out the Massey campus.

“They’ve come from all over New Zealand. We’ve got some coming from the South Island and some all the way from Kerikeri, so it’s a huge distance some people travel to get here.’’

Lectures and presentations were put on to explain the types of courses and subjects offered.

Foxton student Daniel Buckley said he was impressed with what he saw.

“It’s been informative. I’ve been looking at the business side of things so I’ve been over at the lectures just listening and getting information on it and it’s been pretty good.”

Recent changes to the student loan scheme have not appeared to be a deterrent for students looking to get into tertiary education.

UCOL also held its open day in the city yesterday, drawing a crowd of about 2000.

Everything from car bodies to human bodies, and fingernails to galvanised nails were on show for UCOL’s biggest show day of the year.

Students-to-be were treated to interactive displays and demonstrations from more than 100 programmes, with activities including a human body jigsaw, dresdhsing wounds, tyre changes and skin-type checking.
