The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) has received a pass mark in the first performance-target figures released by the Ministry of Health.

The Canterbury board was among the better performers in the major regions in most of the six categories assessed under an initiative from Health Minister Tony Ryall.

CDHB chief executive David Meates said it was a good result and a tribute to staff's hard work.

Canterbury, along with Counties Manukau, was the best of the big boards in emergency department stays, with 87 per cent of those patients admitted being discharged or transferred within six hours.

"That reflects a lot of hard work from staff over the past 18 months.

"Compared with two years ago, it's a significant improvement."

Canterbury was the sixth best of the 21 boards in improved access to elective surgery, exceeding its target of a surgery increase by an average of 4000 discharges per year.

The board just missed the target of those needing radiation treatment receiving it within six weeks, with a 97 per cent result.

It was mid-table with immunisation.

The board's worst mark was in improved diabetes and cardiovascular services, where it finished 19th.
