The Government will not step in to save Christchurch's 198 Youth Health centre, Health Minister Tony Ryall indicated yesterday.

Canterbury GP Richard McCubbin asked Ryall about funding for the centre when the minister spoke at a conference in Christchurch yesterday.

McCubbin asked that the centre receive extra funding to continue to operate, or at least that Ryall speak to the centre's founder, Dr Sue Bagshaw.

Ryall said the Canterbury District Health Board was continuing talks with the youth centre and had offered continued funding worth "several hundreds of thousands of dollars".

He referred any questions about a shortfall to board chairman Alister James. James said at a board meeting yesterday that he told Ryall the board was working towards a youth health "one-stop shop" in Christchurch.
