Wellington Hospital is considering whether to proceed with its scheduled operations this afternoon, after a power failure this morning.

Five patients were in the middle of surgery when the power went out, but backup generators kicked in, allowing the surgery to continue, spokeswoman Izzy Brown said.

No procedures were affected.

Power went out just before 11am and came back on gradually "in stages" since then until fully restored by just after midday, she said.

Hospital bosses were meeting to decide whether to continue with the afternoon's list, she said.

Another spokesman, Lindsay Davis, said it was not clear why the power went out, but it appeared to be a local substation failure.
