The Obesity Action Coalition has slammed a McDonald's promotion offering a petrol discount with a combo.

The Fuel-Up Combo offers 10 cents a litre off fuel at Mobil service stations when buying a Big Mac, medium fries, medium soft drink and a hot apple pie for $9.50.

Coalition executive director Leigh Sturgiss said today the food was the sort that was helping people become fat.

The promotion was another example of McDonald's encouraging the public to eat products that had the highest fat, sodium and sugar contents and the least nutritional value.

"Why isn't this deal available if you buy one of McDonald's salads, deli rolls, fruit or a low-fat smoothie?"

She said the combo contained 5633 kilojoules (the measurement of energy), 64 grams of fat, and 57 grams of sugar.

This was about 70 percent the daily energy requirement and twice the fat intake recommended for an 11-year-old girl, Ms Sturgiss said.

"It is exactly the same with the McDonald's Most Valuable Player discount vouchers which are given to children at weekend sports events. You can't use them to purchase McDonald's healthier options either.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said the promotion was its first value promotion and was about rewarding customers in the tight financial times.

The offer was about giving the people who already went to McDonald's and already ate Big Mac's some extra value.

The spokeswoman said the comments from the Obesity Action Coalitions' were surprising in terms of talking about the daily requirements of an 11-year-old girl.

This promotion was targeting core customers who already ate Big Mac's and with the petrol offer it was about people who drove, "so these are adults", she said.

"If you looked at a typical Big Mac eater, it might be a young adult who drives, that's basically what you are looking at with this sort of promotion, you're certainly not aiming at kids if you're looking at a petrol voucher."

The spokeswoman said the offer was a one-off, three-week promotion and McDonald's was not ruling out other offers in the future.

"So it might be that we look at doing another salad-related promotion in the future."

I noticed in the supermarket today they had a sale on some brands of beer - why no uproar about this - is it not promoting alcoholism; buy more to save more? I'm sick of the majority being governed to allow for the inadequacies of the minority. Let the consumers decide what's best for them.

So political correctness is just the latest weight loss fad, it all makes sense now.

What ever happened to self responsibility, why is it always someone else?'s fault? Now it's the fast food companies that are at fault because of the amount of fat people out there, not the fatties that eat more than they exercise off. Or the tobacco companies at fault, when some idiot who has smoked two packs a day for the past 30 years, develops lung cancer. Or the alcohol companies fault when some teenage girl goes on a binge drinking session and ends up in hospital with alcohol poisoning.

You can hardly blame people for this kind of thinking, we have a government who never takes responsibility for any actions they take, of course this thinking rubs off on the general population, why take responsibility when it's easier to blame someone else. We even have a government organization that specialises in blaming others for your own mistakes and stupidity (OSH).

To all those posters who pointed out that people need to take personal responsibility for what they buy - spot on. Methinks that we will soon need an "action group to protect consumers from action groups" because we clearly can't be trusted to make responsible decisions ourselves.

At least now we can get fat AND destroy the planet!

McDonald's made me fat, Marlboro made me start smoking and Jim Beam made me an alcoholic... Why can't people take responsibility for their actions?

this is choice ;-) spend x $100's of dollars to get a 10 cent voucher from the supermarket or spend $9.50 to get a 10 cent voucher - I hate Big Macs but will buy one to get the voucher and chuck it - and then fill the car up - and use the one from the supermarket for the second fill - "choice"
