An Auckland man is in a serious condition in hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach with a rifle.

A police communications spokesman said emergency services were called to a property in Henderson just after 1pm and found the man, in his 40s, in a serious condition. He was taken to Auckland City Hospital.

A friend, who was at the scene, is helping police to ascertain what happened, and a scene examination is under way.
