State highway 1 south of Kaikoura is regularly closed at night.

State Highway 1 between Christchurch and Kaikoura has reopened after a slip closed it on Tuesday.

Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman Luke Thomas said the slip on the road between Peketa and Goose Bay had been cleared and the road reopened about 9am.

State Highway 1 was badly damaged and blocked by slips in the November 14 earthquake that hit near Kaikoura.

However, there were still nine major slips blocking the road between Kaikoura and Clarence, about 40 kilometres north.
