Deputy Police Commissioner Lyn Provost is to be the new Controller and Auditor-General.

Parliament's Speaker Lockwood Smith said all political parties had agreed to the appointment of Ms Provost.

The position is appointed by Parliament and is in charge of safeguarding the financial integrity of the Government and many other bodies.

She will replace Kevin Brady who retired earlier this year.

By law, the Controller and Auditor-General may serve only one seven-year term.

Mr Brady caused a storm among MPs when he ruled that much of their spending was electioneering and outside Parliament's rules.

Parliament will formally approve Ms Provost's appointment when it sits next week.

Police Commissioner Howard Broad said Ms Provost had a long list of achievements in her time with the force.

These included the move from old Wanganui Law Enforcement System to the National Intelligence Application, organising the police's response to the Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct and overhauling the Police Act.
