First he had to watch the Wallabies lose to the All Blacks, then he had to grin and bear it as his cricketers lost the Ashes, but the worst was still to come for Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

As the result of a bet with Prime Minister John Key, Mr Rudd was forced yesterday to don an All Blacks tie at official engagements, including at Lismore Base Hospital in New South Wales, where his tie was the centre of attention from staff.

Mr Key and Mr Rudd made a friendly wager last week on the result of Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup test in Sydney, won 19-18 by the All Blacks.

Mr Rudd admitted he was not having much fun yesterday, but said the All Blacks tie was proof that "Australians honour our bets".

Mr Key said Mr Rudd looked great in the tie.

"Black is a wonderful colour. Especially if you are mourning the loss of the Ashes."
