No surprise, then, that Ohariu MP Peter Dunne, above, "thoroughly enjoyed" his inaugural appearance dressed as an elf in the Johnsonville Christmas Parade. Sitting at Santa's feet, this was the first time the UnitedFuture leader had appeared in the parade since helping to set it up in 1993.

The role of Santa's helper was chosen for him, but he said it was a good idea.

"They thought it was time I actually took part in the procession since I've been involved all these years," he said. "I thoroughly enjoyed it."

A cheerful crowd of about 25,000 lined the streets of Johnsonville to watch the hour-long parade on Saturday, which was made up of about 45 floats and groups.

The festival spread over the weekend with a fair, carols and a cultural show. The Johnsonville Lions Kite Day was cancelled yesterday because of bad weather.
