Christchurch City Council chief executive Tony Marryatt has received an early Christmas present – a $17,455 pay rise.

The 5 per cent increase, backdated to July 1, takes Marryatt's total package from $452,945 to $470,400, making him one of the country's highest paid local government chiefs.

Marryatt's pay has jumped $99,575 over the past two years.

The package does not include undisclosed reimbursements for home telephone and personal professional fees.

An annual performance review, conducted by councillors in private last week, voted 10 to two to approve the increase.

Councillors Yani Johanson and Sally Buck opposed the move.

Mayor Bob Parker said the 5 per cent rise comprises a 3 per cent "market increase" and another 2 per cent based on Marryatt's annual performance.

"We are extremely fortunate to have a chief executive of Mr Marryatt's calibre at the helm of our organisation," Parker said. "He is a very experienced local body chief executive and, in my opinion, the most effective."

Marryatt's latest pay rise follows a 22 per cent increase in 2008-09, when his pay jumped from $370,825 to $452,945.

His Manakau City Council counterpart earns $412,079, while chief executives in Wellington and Dunedin receive $387,256 and $335,000, respectively.
