It took just 30 seconds today for Labour leader Phil Goff and deputy Annette King to be confirmed in their positions at a meeting of the party's MPs.

Speaking before an all-day caucus of his MPs in Auckland this morning, Mr Goff said: "No I'm not expecting any challenges  ... I'm afraid you'll just have to put up with me for another couple of years."

"I think it's a recognition that the leadership team they have got in place is the best team that they could hope for."

Under Labour's rules the leadership is considered at the first caucus meeting of the middle year of each three-year term.

He said his MPs had worked hard but the first year after a defeat was always hard.

Mr Goff said he expected National's honeymoon to continue for a while longer, but 2010 would be harder for the Government than 2009.

He would be urging party spokespeople to step up policy development, but he said it was not a warning.

A reshuffle was possible later this year or early in 2011 as he moved to give more responsibilities to the third of his caucus that was elected for the first time in 2008.

Labour would be working hard "alongside ordinary new Zealanders" to ensure they would get their fair share out of the recovery and the likely tax changes.

He said Labour would cooperate with the Government on tax, but only if it was in the interests of all, "not just a privileged few".

But he ruled out supporting an increase to GST, one of the recommendations of last week's tax working group report.

What a shame. Unfortunately you are just not leadership material Mr Goff. Neither is Key, but so long as you are leading the opposition, Key will defeat you. You just dont have the charm he has unfortunately. No one wins until you step aside and allow some new blood through. Please do the right thing.

Nobody else wanted a hospital pass. Who is surprised at that?

I'm happy with that. Remember, Labour stuck with Clark even after she lost her first contested election, and she was able to build up the strongest Labour leadership since Fraser. Goff will do it, he's not a complete numpty unlike Key.

Well of course no-one put up their hands for hte job - who would want to lose the next election as a new leader?

there will be more interest in 20112 or 2013 if it looks like Labour is clawing soem support back....but if they are still down then not even then!

Phil - you are a caretaker....enjoy it while you can but don't pretend you are ever going to be the next Labour PM!!

It's only because Helen managed to divest the Labour party ranks of anyone who could remotley tip her out of her job.

Please Phil, get your act together we need to get rid of this horrible National government. Promise not to nanny us, inflict too many social policies upon our heads, climate change rubbish etc and we will vote for you. You could start by offering to Mondayise Waitangi Day and Anzac Day if you are serious about wanting to make a difference to the average worker's lives. Please Phil try a little harder to make an impact this year we can't live with National for too long - I suggest you do get rid of Annette King though she is not an asset at all.

Phil and Annette are well worn bedwarmers. But for who? Its not about who Labour offer, but what they offer. Its rubbish and Kiwis have woken up.

The last Labour man genuinely worth his weight in gold was Sir Roger, Labours loss is ACT's gain.

Perhaps Goff is the best they have, but it is alarming that there is not even anyone close enough that would need any discussion.

That's a real problem with Labour. Too many years under Auntie Helen's iron fist turned them all into nodding heads. No depth of leadership.

Whether you love him or hate him, you have to acknowledge that Key is very much a coach rather than an authoritarian. His ministers are encouraged to grow and become better leaders. That gives National much better depth.
