All safely protected from IRD by complex trust structures of course.

Why can MP's invest in a property that they can then use as their electorate office (collecting a rent from Parliamentary Services)? The MP collects both the rent and (over time) makes a capital gain. This seems fundamentally wrong to me.

Dan   #127   04:45 pm May 18 2011

There is a good reason why there would be more National multiple property owners on this list than Labour...because unlike the latter, most National MPs actually worked before taking the taxpayer dollar. So really the question is, how did they not only earn enough money & accumulate it to own so many properties make no mistake, many bought these properties well before entering parliament)? What was it that made them successful? Perhaps the ability to hide their income in trusts and companies making a loss? Well then you have Labour to thank for that. Bottom line they're all tarred with the same brush, the difference is the this National govt knows how to manage money unlike the former Labour govt that mismanaged a decade of surpluses making us one of the first countries to succumb to the recession. @ Cassidy #104 - I agree. It's garbage. @ Brynn #108 re "Why is Amy Adams the only MP listed have ALL her properties in trust thus reducing her tax burden, not a good look." You don't know this. They may be making a profit which means no loss to pass on to the beneficiaries. Also National have closed some of these loopholes from 1 APril this year....unlike Labour who essentially created them by default when the introduced the top rate of tax in 2000 and allowed the rich to get away with not paying their fair share for 9 years!!!!!

Serving the public or themselves? Pretty clear really. Wake up NZ

Mike   #125   04:39 pm May 18 2011

So....Bill 'The Dipton Double Dipper' English now owns NO properties? There's a Tui Bill-board.

Justice   #124   04:35 pm May 18 2011

"CGT and Land Tax wouldn't work here in NZ" Yeah, now you know why! They won't do anything to hurt themselves in the pocket

Hamish   #123   04:34 pm May 18 2011

This list only scratch's the surface of what MP's own, and have looked through it with interest. For example Louise Upston is on the list with one property - but she does accurately list her family trust - "Upston Family Trust" - that last time I checked, this trust owned 20 ++ investment properties.

Louise is not alone and there are many others who have clearly done this on the list.

One would have to look further behind the curtain of these MP's trusts & companies to find the true level of property ownership/control.

Claire   #122   04:19 pm May 18 2011

OK, here is another challenge to our media. Instead of ranting about how many properties MP's own or how much of a tax cut the CEO of Telecom got, how about telling us how many properties our All Blacks own and how many trusts they have, or how much of a tax cut they got, or what their total income is. Then, it would be interesting to see if the great unwashed and financially illiterate in this country complain about how unfair that is. Lets have some perspective around the whole thing.

Arthur   #121   04:15 pm May 18 2011

I don't begrudge the investor doing this, but let us get it straight. So, we have been told by the gnomes of Treasury and the Govt that ordinary citizens investing in property have been ill advised and have been bad for the country in over inflating property prices yet the MPs of that Govt do exactly the same thing like no tomorrow. Consistency and a lack of hypocrisy is a great thing. It is little wonder the spectre of a capital gains tax on investment property never emerges from Parliament. They'd be the first to be hit.

amm   #120   04:13 pm May 18 2011

It does make it clear why National is so against capital gains taxes...
