Prime Minister John Key's tea tape saga has grown legs and gone global after police declared their intention to search media outlets for evidence.
Leading international sites such as The Guardian, the BBC and Business Week have run stories highlighting Key's complaints about "News of the World" tactics from New Zealand media.
He lodged a complaint with police after a conversation between himself and ACT candidate John Banks was recorded at a Newmarket Cafe by videographer Bradley Ambrose and passed to the Herald on Sunday.
Ambrose yesterday filed proceedings in a bid to have the court rule on whether the conversation was private, as police said they would get search warrants to search media outlets for interviews and recordings about the tape.
The Guardian angled on the search warrants. Its media commentator and journalism professor Roy Greenslade also wrote a column explaining the "so-called tea tapes affair".
"Key met John Banks, the leader of a rival party [sic], at a cafe in Auckland on Friday afternoon. They have formed an alliance to fight a general election later this month," he wrote.
Under the headline "John Key 'illegal tapes' row erupts in New Zealand", the BBC's story led with "police have ordered four media organisations to hand over evidence of an alleged illegal recording of Prime Minister John Key".
Sky News Australia didn't mince words in its straight-down-the-line piece, again angled on the searches, and headlined "NZ police to target media over Key tape".
"The meeting between Mr Key and Mr Banks was seen as message from Key to his National party supporters in Epsom, where Banks is running as an ACT candidate, that they should vote tactically on November 26 to give Mr Banks the seat so ACT can get into parliament and support the government," it said.
Business Week wrote "the alleged crime is diverting attention from economic policies in the run-up to the Nov. 26 vote, which opinion polls suggest Key's government will easily win."
It quoted Wellington-based political scientist Jon Johansson
"It's a horrendous own goal," Johansson said.
"A big part of the explanation for his tail wind ever since he's been leader is the really quite generous media coverage that has accompanied him. You start breaking those relationships up and you watch how it all changes.""
South Africa's News24 also focused on the search warrants, while Boston.com labelled the saga a "privacy dispute"
"New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has found himself embroiled in a dispute over his own right to privacy, just ahead of general elections at the end of next week," it said.
The international coverage adds to the dozens of New Zealand stories, columns and blogs flooding the media sphere this week.
However, the story shows no sign of losing its legs, with Ambrose's court action and search warrants expected to drag into next week.
The election will be held Saturday week.

Just shows what a Flip Flop donkey he is, all who think we should have a Prime Minister who talks rubbish and can not even admit and all you idiots who love his blabberings vote national!
Its not a privacy issue. Can't have it both ways -invite the media to cover a staged conversation that is held publically with the intent of creating news headlines -then you can't expect to edit/censor the bits you don't want reported!
Key clearly trying to hide something and knows its damaging! True colours showing through the facade...
Do you remember the days when the media used to be neutral and unbiased in this country. Not just this story but almost every main story now run has personal opinion and a media angle included.
I think John Key should just release the tape but at the same time I think the police should also go the media. Increasingly the media seem to think they are above the law and any level of decency and ethics.
The only one getting any traction out of this is good ol Winston...how about reporting on how John, Peter D and the M party have given the beaches away, robbing all non IWI people of NZ the beaches and seabed and future generations.
It really is quite simple... release the tape and and give us an insight into the real person who is our prime minister. I don't want a hipocrite running our country. And really people, are we not sick to death of greed... the proof is that this is an expensive country to live in no matter what your income is. Why can't income tax be fair to all no matter how much you earn? Why can't we have fair child support laws in NZ? Why do healthy foods cost so much? Why is the tax on petrol percentage based.. shouldn't it be fixed?
Like every storm in this teacup what most folk have missed is the indicators of value systems that are being displayed by the major players,, Yes, what's [possibly] been said isn't really the issue, it's how it's been managed by the National party that's important. For the professionals within the party to make such a mess of Media Management like this indicates to me that I wouldn't like them to manage my affairs
@10 - Guyon, totally agree with your comments! And to all those that say this issue is meaningless you are so wrong, this issue illustrates perfectly what is wrong with this country. The media have too much power and they are not neutral. They created this monster Key and have never held him or his govt accountable, and the average NZer has proven themselves to be a moron because they have been sucked in hook, line and sinker! There is no substance to this guy or his govt, there is no vision, no leadership, no policies to get us out of the mire or grow the economy, just the same old failed National policies from previous decades. But the media have suckered everyone into thinking he is a "good bloke", bollocks!!, he is a sleazy car salesman peddling lemons to the country and everyone is buying it! Watch Key's interview with the BBC Hardtalk programme and tell me the guy is not an embarrassingly ignorant man! We are doomed if this govt is returned :-(
The police are insulting every New Zealander who has been victim to an unsolved crime. What the world needs to know is that we have an enormous amount of unsolved crime here in NZ. The police do not record all crime when you report it. It is appalling that the police should waste time on search warrants for these tapes when NZ has one of the highest child abuse and sexual abuse in the developed world. For all those people who have cases unresolved whether they are home invasion, burglary, theft, their car stolen, child abuse, sexual abuse, theft of a deceased estate, assaults in schools, or feel for th victims like children who are helpless, I appeal to you to walk on your town or city police station around NZ and protest. I suggest this is done on mass, someone set a time and day and we all go. The front line police know they are behind with thousands of cases. The commissioner has succumbed to political pressure and should resign. The only damage done with these two tapes is that someone may be found to be dishonest. Well done to the media. The media should be showing the character of a politician before an election so that people are fully informed. This action by the police is appalling.
The New Zealand Media, have created this saga, and want to drone on and on about it, to the extent where we simply dodge the news. It was the media, who kept asking when are you going to have a cup of tea, in the first place, that has lead to this rediculous carry on, and of course a lot of the left supporters want to yap about it,to the deteriment of there parties. In the meantime we have Winston Peters, either leaking out bits of nothing, trying to sensationalise an audience. Has he seen the recording, or is he just making a noise. If he has seen the recording then why is there not something being done about it.TV3 last night were just disgusting, the way they were portraying John Key, Campbell was going on like an idiot. Get over it.
