PM John Key lampooned on US comedy show
Prime Minister John Key's ponytail pulling pranks have landed him another spot on US comedy show Last Week Tonight.
Host John Oliver tore into the Prime Minister and described him as more cat than man for his pawing antics.
Oliver hailed One News reporter Rebecca Wright's teaser for Sky News "a very unusual story breaking here today about the Prime Minister, a ponytail and some pinot noir" as the single greatest news tease he had ever heard.
No matter how hard they tried to imagine a scenario with all of those three things together it would never be as weird as what actually happened, Oliver told his viewers.
Key's reported description of Amanda Bailey's ponytail as 'tantalising' was creepy with the only thing that could ever be described as tantalising without sounding creepy was steak, Oliver said.
Offering bottles of plonk as an apology was not a suitable response, he said.
"You can't pull someone's hair for months and then offer them a bottle of wine. You are the Prime Minister of New Zealand not a Real Housewife of New Jersey."
Oliver told his audience of millions worldwide the Ponytail-Gate affair got weirder with revelations Key had randomly touched other people's hair on other occasions.
"John Key can't pass any piece of dangling hair without pawing at it. He is more cat than prime minister," Oliver observed as he made a cat-pawing motion.
Key's actions had completely undermined his authority during any diplomatic negotiations, he said.
The episode of Last Week Tonight featuring Ponytail-Gate aired on Sunday night in the US and airs tonight at 10.30pm on SoHo in New Zealand.
