Grandparents raising their grandchildren will be given access to free parenting programmes, Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has announced.
Parenting Place, which already provides parenting programmes through its Toolbox system, will create a specific programme tailored at grandparents raising their grandchildren.
Bennett said the new programme would provide the skills needed to parent children of today.
"They do a tough job considering many are caring for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect - they need this," she said.
The programme will include nine hours of practical parenting advice on DVD with a manual which will allow grandparents to work through it at home.
The DVD includes advice from Dame Alison Holst, Bob Kerridge and Pio Terei.
"I am delighted to be able to offer this programme, free of charge, to up to 5000 grandparents who are raising grandchildren."
The programme will cost the Government $600,000 a year.
