New Zealand's Ambassador to the United States, Mike Moore, has undergone major heart surgery.

Fairfax Media understands Moore had recovered from a heart valve replacement and was back at work in Washington DC.

Moore, who was prime minister briefly in 1990, has been ambassador in Washington since 2010. In 1999 he was director-general of the World Trade Organisation.
