A $400m irrigation fund will be bankrolled by the partial sale of state assets if National is re-elected.

National Party leader John Key today announced the new Future Investment Fund would be drawn down to pay for capital spending on irrigation schemes.

There would be a new Crown Water Investment Company set up with money available from 2013 to start up new projects.

The new company would invest in schemes with the expectation of a commercial return.
