Organisers of the one of the most notorious events on the Otago University calendar have invited the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to join them for a drink and a dance.

Ryan Edgar, of the Otago University Students Association, says this year's "royal" Hyde St keg party has issued an official invitation to William and Catherine to come and let their hair down.

"Tickets are in pretty hot demand but we will still send out an official invite to the royals and we'll be able to make a special space for them if they're keen to get into it," says Edgar.

"To be honest, we know Harry would be the one who would really love the day, but with the young couple having a little break from wee George, we reckon they can let their hair down and have a great time while they're in the best little city in the country."

A total of 3500 tickets have been sold for the infamous drink-fest, which - VIPs or not - is taking on a royal tone.

Third- year psychology student Hannah Flett and her six Hyde St flatmates are going the extra mile.

"It's just awesome they're coming here. We're all dressing up as princesses for the day and we're turning the flat into a Disney-type castle."

The female flat is a huge fan of the royals. "They're so cool. They're such a cute couple . . and Will is very physically pleasing. Who doesn't want to be Kate Middleton?"

Edgar said the association would understand if the royals miss the party.

"But if they can't we'd love to have them come along on Sunday and see the clean-up."
