Despite the drizzle, dozens of fans turned up at Oriental Bay today to welcome the royal trio into Wellington.

Some waited for an hour for the motorcade, which did not slow down, or lower its windows.

While some reporters were complaining, spectators' spirits remained high.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their son, baby Prince George, landed in Wellington just after midday and drove to Government House via the bays.

Royal fans huddled in bus stops, sheltering from the weather, awaiting the procession.

But four-year-old Katie Subritzky, accompanied by her mother Angela Subritzky, was too excited about seeing "a princess" to worry about the rain.

Besides, she had a Disney princess umbrella to keep her dry.

Katie said she was wearing one of her best dresses for the occasion.

"It's just something really special. It's not often you get a royal visit," Angela Subritzky said.

They managed to get a glimpse of the duchess through the car window as she sped past, but, as Angela Subritzky said, "It was over so quickly!"

Another mother-daughter duo, Debbie Smith and 10-month-old Olive Smith, were also pleased to have seen the royals, however fleetingly.

"William leaned forward and waved through the middle," Debbie said.

"It was amazing. They must be really jet-lagged, but I still go to see William and Catherine. I couldn't spot George though!"
