WARNINGS FOR HEAVY RAIN AND SEVERE GALES ABOUT THE SOUTH ISLAND AND LOWER NORTH ISLAND THIS MORNING

Northland to Taumarunui and Taupo, including Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay: A period of rain spreading east today, then clearing.

Taranaki and Taihape to Wellington and Wairarapa, also Nelson and Marlborough: Rain with some heavy falls, clearing this morning, but showers returning towards evening. Northwest gales, severe in Wairarapa, Wellington and Marlborough, easing by mid-morning.

Buller, Westland and Fiordland: Showers, clearing south of Hokitika this afternoon.

Canterbury: Fine at first, apart from showers in the foothills, spreading elsewhere this afternoon, with thunderstorms in the north. Northwest gales, easing this morning.

Otago and Southland: Rain easing to showers this afternoon. Severe southwest gales this morning.

Chatham Islands: Rain developing this afternoon.

Friday: Remaining showers becoming isolated during the morning and long fine spells developing.

Saturday: North Island, cloud increasing, with a few late showers in the north. South Island, cloud increasing, with rain developing in the west, and scattered late rain elsewhere.

Sunday: Rain for most places, possibly heavy, then mainly fine for the eastern North Island and Nelson, and a few showers elsewhere.

Chatham Islands Cloudy periods, a few showers, and southwesterlies on Friday, then mainly fine with light winds on Saturday. Rain and gale northerlies developing on Sunday.
