The trial of a 66-year-old Marlborough man facing 48 sex-related charges begins in the High Court in Nelson on Monday.

The man was arrested in August 2012 on the charges, which span 29 years, with the earliest alleged offending taking place in 1984, and the most recent in 2012, shortly before he was arrested.

Most charges relate to alleged incidents in and around Blenheim as well as six near Kaikoura, and one in the lower North Island.

He was granted interim name suppression when he first appeared in court on August 31, 2012, and that will continue until at least the end of his trial. The charges have been dealt with in the Blenheim and Nelson courts several times since his arrest.

The man was initially arrested on 59 charges, which were increased to 130 in January last year.

But Crown prosecutor Mark O'Donoghue reduced this to 48 charges to go to trial.

The man faces charges ranging from rape to sexual grooming to indecent assault to making objectionable publications.

All details of the women named in the charges are permanently suppressed.
