Greens expect replacement named soon

The Green Party has struggled to find a replacement Nelson candidate after dumping Aaryn Barlow at the beginning of June, but expects to name one at the end of the month.

That will give plenty of time to mount an effective campaign, Nelson convenor Carl Horn said yesterday.Barlow, a second-time candidate who a few days before had improved on the party list, was asked to resign after he quit his job with the Nelson Environment Centre under a cloud.

He told the Nelson Mail last month that his job resignation related to information-sharing with a third party after he decided he couldn't work with an energy project partner. After learning of it, the Green Party hierarchy asked him to step down, leaving him "gutted", he said.

Horn said the party had since "tapped the shoulders of several people" who had considered becoming the candidate, but declined.

"We do have a nominee who's going through the process, and is quite keen."

There would be a selection meeting on July 30. Under Green Party rules, an electorate candidate has to be on the party list.

"This fellow has been interviewed and he's going through the process with the party. When he's on the list he's eligible to hand me his nomination form. I'm expecting that to happen in a few days."

The election had yet to pick up speed and July 30 was not too late for the new candidate to begin an effective campaign, Horn said.

Barlow's removal hadn't created a rift in the party's Nelson ranks, he said.

He had been ranked 24th on the party list, and saw the Greens climb to 16 per cent of the Nelson party vote in 2011, up from 9 per cent in 2008 and the sixth-best result of any electorate.
