The water may look calm in Tracy Neal's dramatic shot, but the clouds give a clearer indication of the high winds whipping up trouble over the upper south island tonight.

The Met Service have issued gale warnings around the Able Tasman and Cook Strait, with winds reaching expected to reach up to 35 knots in places.

Needless to say the sea is expected to get pretty rough, with poor visibility due to showers and a northwest swell of up to a metre.

The good news is that things are expected to settle down by Monday morning.
