A woman had to be cut out of her car on Saturday after it plummeted off the road and on to the beach in Atawhai near | Nelson.
St John Ambulance acting shift manager Anne-Marie Harris said the woman, who is in her 50s, sustained moderate pelvic and spinal injuries.
Her Nissan Terrano car collided head on with a white sedan car on the highway before veering on to the beach. Fortunately it was low tide, said Nelson Fire Service station officer Darren Shackleton.
Because the car landed on the driver's side, the firefighters had to cut the roof off while the woman was inside. Ambulance officers sedated her and she was removed in the seat, still seatbelted in, he said.
Harris said the other car contained two women in their early 60s who sustained mild to moderate chest injuries.
