A 71-year-old man has suffered potentially serious head injuries after an alloy dinghy became airborne in high winds near Nelson.
The incident occurred yesterday about 4.45pm, at Torrent Bay, in the Abel Tasman National Park, where the 14-foot (4.3 metre) boat with outboard motor had been parked on the beach.
The man, from Takaka, was struck by the flying boat.
He was cared for by bystanders until the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter arrived and he was flown to Nelson Hospital.
