The Nelson experience
BY NAOMI ARNOLDCharlie and I aren't really beginners at Nelson anymore - although there's plenty I haven't yet done. Flying home over the summer-brown hills, I did feel like I was coming home again. But I confess that I haven't explored the place much at all. After eight months here I haven't even done the most obvious stuff - I only walked to the Centre of New Zealand for the first time last week.
When Josh, my flatmate and I puffed our way to the top of the Centre of New Zealand just before sunset, we saw about a dozen tourists lounging at the summit in silence, watching the sun go down. All took out digital cameras and dutifully snapped a picture, and no doubt all went back to their backpackers' or hogged the free internet at the library and uploaded their travel pictures onto Facebook.
We felt like typically smug Nelsonians as we walked back down - we actually belong here. But our Nelson is much different from that experienced by the tourists.
I haven't walked the entire Abel Tasman track, barely visited Queen's Gardens, never been out fishing and haven't seen glass-blowing or wearable art up close.
I've only been berry-picking once, and though I spent a painful winter here working in the vineyards a few years ago, I've regrettably never been on a winery tour, which is something I must remedy immediately.
In the Nelson Mail's Reader's Photos and Nelsonians Abroad column, homesick locals write about how much they miss the region. But is that just the same sunset-coloured glasses that the tourists wear? What do you really like, and dislike, about living here?

i agree with francesco sinibaldi.
Like - The weather, The hills that are never out of view, the view from Princes Drive over the bay, The easy access to great beaches and national parks, the amazing range of locally produced beer and wine, the people, the markets and the great festivals, events and activities.
Dislike - 'Sunshine wages', property prices, Hoons on St Vincent Street at 3am, and the fact that people think there's a 'traffic problem' in Nelson (try London).
Like - the weather, the Victory Square community, the Freehouse, decent events, the saturday market, great beaches, hunting and fishing, the mostly friendly people.
Dislike - lack of decent job opportunities, the missing generation (where are all the 20-30 year olds?), the small minded parochialism, those that have never lived outside of Nelson, the religious conservatism, the massive gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots', Richmond, influx of Christchurch bogans over Xmas.
Like: The bay, the hills, the pace of life, the national parks, the beer
Dislike: The occasional provincial attitude, the broken glass everywhere, the low wages, the monstrous teens that plague the CBD
Like: being able to see the mountains, the hills, the plains, the rivers, the sea, the beaches, the weather; the relaxed lifestyle; the welcoming openness of the people; the opportunities Dislike: the intrusiveness of the small community; sunshine wages; inability of many to see outside the box; the sheer number of tourists during the peak season and the impact of that number on the natural environment
Likes: being 10 minutes from most places, easy shopping, no traffic, the view of the ranges, Rough Island, the river, the sun, the ice on my windscreen and snow on the hills, Golden Bay, Marlborough Sounds, the outdoor kid friendly cafes... Dislikes: people who can't merge into traffic, racist rednecks, the lack of cultural colour...
Likes: having the rivers, lakes, beaches and world class national parks at the doorstep. Sitting on the cathedral steps on a Saturday morning with a $7 container of great Thai food that would normally cost $15. Walking up the Maitai and being enveloped by gorgeous green hills instead of high rise buildings. Fresh early morning native bush. Dislikes: low wages and lack of opportunity, ignorance of the world/small town syndrome, BUT I also dislike leaving when I come home to visit :)
I love looking at the western ranges and all its changes, the sheltered clean beaches. The clean rivers, the nelson lakes, walking for days in the bush only concern is changing weather no bears or snakes, or deadly spiders. All the national parks. After living in Australia and the states for a few years there's not to much to dislike. Nelsons pretty sweet people who complain need to get out more.
Like - The Beaches, the food ( some awesome restaurants ), people are generally nice, hills and the sea. Some of the most amazing views to be had anywhere on the planet. Great fruit. Easy to get around - the traffic here is easy !
Dis-likes - If you see something you like, grab it, cos it wont be there tomorrow ( lack of choice in shops ). Food prices ( what the hell ! ). Some of the worst drivers in the world. The lack of shows, comedy, music. Hopefully the new theatre will solve that.

In all its meanings.
