Training for Buller

bullerIf the Buller half or full marathon is your goal over this summer, you'll join the thousands who make the trip to Westport every year for one of the great events. As you see in the picture, it's pretty crowded at the start, but it doesn't take long for the field to spread out.

But first, it’s time to have a training plan - and to stick to it.

The three programmes on this site are all aimed at the person starting from a very low base. You’ll need to spend the next two months getting use to the walking or running habit and establishing a base. Choose the shorter options for the various sessions.

If you’re a more experienced competitor, you may want to do more, but this programme will carry you through if you choose the longer options for the various sessions.

Plan your days so that your training doesn’t get shelved because you’re too busy. It’s important to have a regular pattern. Don’t go too hard. Your heart and lungs will soon get used to the extra effort being asked of them, but your muscles and tendons won’t. Don’t go out hard early on – it’s a recipe for injury.

Until at least January, you should not be overly stressed in your training. Put in the time and be regular.

You should also start thinking about the logistics of getting to Westport. Where will you stay? You can read about the race and find out about the entry details click here.
