The model train at Tahunanui has been voted the most family friendly activity in Nelson.

To celebrate the win the Nelson District Parents Centre and the Nelson Society of Modellers are holding a family fun evening at the Tahunanui Fun Park on Saturday.

Parents Centre committee member Bec McEwan said parent centres nationally set out to find by public vote the most family friendly activities across New Zealand.

The public in Nelson voted for the modellers train at Tahunanui.

The awards were run for the first time this year.

Bec says the family fun evening was a great way to celebrate the awards and the modellers winning "because they are such a great group of men and women that are volunteers like us. They are absolutely thrilled, it's so lovely to see."

The public are invited to join the event and people can bring a picnic or enjoy the sausage sizzle. The trains will be running and other entertainment for children include Flossie the Balloon lady, Faerie Lou and face-painting.

"We just want to have a bit of fun."

The Parents Centre are a volunteer-run organisation that provides pre and post-natal education and support for parents.

  • The Family Fun Evening runs from 5pm to 8pm at the Tahunanui fun park. Postponed if wet.
