A Nelson artist has the chance to have his or her artwork seen by hundreds of people, through a beer label competition.

Art Expo Nelson has joined forces with Fresh Choice Nelson and Sprig & Fern for the beer label competition.

The winning artwork will feature on a limited edition beer created by Sprig & Fern master brewer Tracy Banner. The winner will also receive $1000.

The Fresh Choice Nelson City People's Art Award competition is organised by Art Expo Nelson. The special beer will be sold at Fresh Choice Nelson, Sprig & Fern locations and at Art Expo Nelson, July 11 to 13, at Saxton Stadium.

Tracy says she is excited by the chance for an artist to create and design a unique label for one of its beers.

"It's a bit outside the square for us and very nice for me to be involved in something different," she says.

Five finalists will be chosen and the public can vote for their favourite piece. Applications close on Friday, May 16.

The winning entry will be announced at Art Expo Nelson's Opening Night on July 11. The five finalists' artworks will be on display and for sale at Art Expo Nelson during the three-day event.

At Art Expo Nelson last year, a similar prize was awarded to an artist whose work ended up on a wine label sold at Fresh Choice Nelson.

Art Expo Nelson project manager Nic Foster says he hopes plenty of other artists embrace this opportunity.

"I think we can all imagine how exciting it would be to have something you have created to be out there in the public view for a change, instead of a traditional art gallery space," Nic says.
