SOUNDS OF SUMMER: Concord Dawn will bring a taste of drum'n'bass to Summer Six.

Relevant offers

With more than 3000 tickets sold already, and a "massive volume" of interest and excitment, Summer Six is already being tipped to become an annual event.

The all-ages concert has been organised by Phat Club owners Dave White and Selena Coombes, who have just returned from Inangahua after organising the multi-day Phat 10 New Year party.

Summer Six will feature six of the hottest acts in New Zealand performing at the new Cricket Oval at Saxton Field on Saturday.

Running from noon until 8pm, the all-Kiwi lineup features the Black Seeds, Katchafire, the Nathan Haines Live Band, P-Money, Concord Dawn and Optimus Gryme, making for a combo of funky jazz, reggae, infectious grooves, hip-hop, drum'n'bass and dubstep.

Having just played at the Phat party, Matt Harvey of Concord Dawn is looking forward to a different sort of vibe at Summer Six.

"It is the sort of thing where you can take your kids and still be home at midnight. And you don't get rained on, and you don't have to get bitten by mossies or stay in the tent and all of that, so I guess it has a wider throw."

Harvey is enjoying a summer away from Austria, where he has lived for the past four years, and is doing the New Zealand circuit before heading to Australia and then back to Europe.

His studio is in Austria and he is halfway through recording a new album, which is due out in September.

Concord Dawn's last album, Chaos By Design, was released in 2006.

Harvey says that on Saturday, he will play some preview tracks from the new album, which is more vocally rich than previous ones and features Kiwi singers Rikki Morris, Nina McSweeney and Paul McLaney.

He plans to stick around in Austria for at least four more years before "probably" moving back to New Zealand and settling down.

Before he heads to Europe again, Harvey will play a spot at the Big Day Out.

He already pretty much has his year mapped out, with gigs all over Europe, Australia and New Zealand and, of course, an album release tour later in the year.

Tickets for Summer Six are likely to be available until early tomorrow afternoon at Everyman in Nelson or Cyberworld Cafe in Motueka. After this, there will be limited gate sales from 11am on Saturday at Saxton Field.

Children under 12 can attend for free, and gate sales will cost $40. Eftpos will be available at both the gate and the bar, but most of the food stalls will take cash only.

Ad Feedback

The public entrance is on the south side of the cricket oval. This is also the side where most of the car parking will be.

Because the event is licensed, photo identification is needed at the entrance gate for an R18 wristband if you wish to enter the bar area.

There is strictly no BYO alcohol, glass, dogs or drugs allowed. There will be bag searches at the gate.

No chairs or umbrellas are allowed, as these could damage the pitch – shade will be provided.

Taxis and buses will be available between 6pm and 8.30pm for transportation home or into town at the end of the event.

Annoyed resident - Would it have not made sense on such a hot and sunny afternoon to take your kids to the beach, river or park instead of shutting them inside with air-con and a movie? Or would the noise from others enjoying the outdoors annoy you as well?

Without a doubt the worst music I ever heard, and I didn't have to pay to get in, I couldn't fail to hear it in my home, it invaded my life to an extent on a hot afternoon my family sat inside with the air conditioner going and the doors and windows shut and we still couldn't hear the family movie the kids had hired, god only knows what the people who attended the events hearing will be like in ten years, will definitely be amongst a large numbers of not so near residents that will be complaining about this dammned music!

ummm how disappointing. Really thought seeing as phat put this on it would've been well organised. Let me start, how about forming two queues to get in. -One for people who actually went to the trouble of buying tickets pre-sale, and another line for those who decided to show up on the day and pay double to get in. Then there's the matter of people with kids strolling on past the huge queue that everyone else was in for a least 45 minutes. Sure they have kids but 5 adults walking in wih one 8 year-old really gets agitating. We missed half of the acts in the queue, and once we finally got to the front here was a child doing the ticketing! And trying to get a drink made us miss the next act once we finally got in. No shade, no water and no toilet paper. It's a real shame, especially with people throwing round "What did we really expect from Nelson", "Knew it was too good o be true." Don' get me wrong I had an amazing time , but that was only due to the musicians and nothing to do with the venue, hosts, or atmosphere. Too bad huh epic fail.

Great choice of acts and good venue, so nice one to all involved for organising this. BUT- if it's done again next year, A LOT more planning needs to be done on how to get the gates & bar running efficiently and they need to book more portaloos. There were 15 portaloos and a few 'static' ones for 5,000 people- obviously the results were gross! You had to queue for ages to use a filthy toilet that had no paper- fine, perhaps, for the guys but not nice for the women. Also, each time we went to the bar we had to wait for at least 40 minutes to be served- it was a complete joke. And they said shade would be provided. Where exactly? The over-crowded beer tent, miles from the stage. Great planning there too. =( In short, waiting for 50 minutes to get in = no fun ; waiting for beers for at least 45 minutes = no fun ; waiting for disgusting and under-booked toilets = no fun. That said, great choice of acts and we did have fun, inspite of the insane amount of time spent waiting in line.

Yep, it's been awesome -- but finishing work at 2pm meant arriving there at 2.30 and queueing for 75 minutes ... should have been more gates working during the peak bit, guys. And the too long changeover meant half the crowd left before Concord Dawn even hit the stage. Still - awesome concert ... maybe 6000 there - great venue, good vibes apart from a minor Blenheim v Nelson tussle! The (black) seeds are there for this as an annual set, team --- how about two stages for quicker turnarounds next time?

Agreed Devvo. Nelson summer gigs are awesome-even if the trafalger centre is totally pathetic. I'm gutted I'm missing this due to work. Would have loved to have seen The Black Seeds. Damn!

Awesome. Just hope the weather holds out for this one after the mudbath at Phat last week! Hope this can become an annual event, we need more gigs like this in Nelson.
