The original Transformers was a rollicking, fun, special-effects-driven, action blockbuster entertainment that made you itch for more. Well, it's time to scratch – but for many viewers this sequel won't bring the same pleasure.

There's no shortage of special effects, but the mayhem is so relentless and repetitive it becomes exhausting overkill.

What's sorely missing is an engaging story; instead the bludgeoning action renders what story there is chaotic and incoherent.

Shia LaBeouf's Sam is off to college, farewelling his hot, mechanic girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox) – but soon the two of them, plus John Turturro as a disgraced government agent, and the military are caught up in a new clash between the good Autobots, led by Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and the evil Decepticons, with a satanic mastermind called the Fallen resurrecting the big and bad Megatron – and ultimately a gigantic transformer combo called Devastator.

Director Michael Bay has made a noisy, dumb action extravaganza that should appeal most to juvenile boys, while Bay's doting on Megan Fox will give hormonal teenage lads the sweats.
