The latest Pixar animated movie is a buoyant, soaring and affecting tale for all ages.
It brings together two people on opposite sides of the age spectrum, both with holes in their hearts and lives.
Elderly curmudgeon Carl and Russell, an innocent, wide-eyed boy, accidentally begin a journey of discovery together, using thousands of helium-filled balloons to lift Carl's home into the sky.
They head for South America to search for a faraway land Carl's late wife Ellie dreamed of finding. The story is interwoven with dangers and funny business, action and comedy, including talking animals, a surreal Looney Tunes-type big bird, and an unexpected lunatic villain. The last half-hour provides high-flying, perilous fun, with airborne excitement and narrow escapes.
It's an enchanting, poignant tale with surprising emotional depth, wit, imagination and, most of all, humanity – a reminder that the spirit of adventure can be found in life's journey, especially if you have the good fortune to share it with a loved one and look at it from the upside.
